Zarzueleando: The perfect fusion between music and theater

The Armonía Cultural Foundation, the Quito City Orchestra, and the Casa de la Música Philharmonic Foundation bring to the stage the talent of young Ecuadorians through “Zarzueleando”, a lyrical anthology that narrates different eras and aspects of Spanish life. This production will feature more than 80 artists performing romances, duets, and choruses from zarzuelas such as La Verbena de la Paloma, La Gran Vía, Doña Francisquita, and the incomparable Luisa Fernanda, showcasing the full splendor of this musical genre. The performance will take place at Casa de la Música on Sunday, June 5, at 5:00 p.m.

This family-friendly show is under the general direction of María Fernanda Argoti, director of the Armonía Cultural Foundation. Musical direction will be led by guest conductor Maestro Luis Castro, featuring the Quito City Orchestra and two international guests: Costa Rican baritone Fitzgerald Ramos and Colombian stage director Shamir Rojas.

Zarzueleando offers an avant-garde staging with group choreographies, theater, and music that immerse the audience in the Spanish tradition of the 19th century, blending the comic and dramatic elements of the rural drama of the time—intrigue, love, and honor—sentiments that remain relevant to this day.

This original production, created by the Armonía Cultural Foundation, combines several musical works adapted to form a narrative set in a traditional Spanish neighborhood, where a comic story of love, passion, and jealousy unfolds.

Since September 23, 2011, the Armonía Cultural Foundation, a non-profit organization, has opened its doors to culture with the mission of promoting educational and sociocultural projects that foster the exchange of experiences across all areas of art.
